What Is Conditional Access?
Microsoft Entra Conditional Access helps protect your business by controlling how and when users can access company applications, accounts and resources.
When someone attempts to sign in, Conditional Access considers information such as who the user is, what device they are using, their location and the potential risk of the sign-in. Based on policies set by your IT team, access can be allowed, blocked, limited or require an additional verification step, such as multifactor authentication (MFA).
This gives your business stronger security without creating unnecessary login steps for every user, every time.
Conditional Access Features
Smart Access Policies
Your IT team can create rules that determine how company resources can be accessed. Different security requirements can be applied depending on the user, device, location or level of risk.
Multifactor Authentication
Conditional Access can require additional identity verification when needed. For example, a user may be asked to complete MFA before being granted access to company information.
Risk-Based Access
Microsoft analyzes security signals to help identify potentially risky activity. Conditional Access can use this information to require additional verification, restrict access or completely block a suspicious sign-in.
User & Device-Based Controls
Access policies can consider both the person signing in and the device being used. This provides greater control over how employees access company resources from different devices.
Location-Based Controls
Your IT team can create policies based on where a sign-in is coming from. This can help restrict access from locations that don’t meet your organization’s security requirements.
Session Controls
Security doesn’t have to stop after someone successfully signs in. Conditional Access policies can also place restrictions on a user’s session when additional protection is needed.
Policy Testing & Reporting
Report-only mode allows your IT team to see how a Conditional Access policy would affect users before fully enforcing it. This can help identify potential issues and fine-tune security policies before they are put into place.
